Replace Google English as the Default Search Engine Instead of Google HK in China (Chrome Browser)

Google Chrome has several critical strengths compare to other browsers. I’ve been using it as my primary web browser more than a year. Amongst, one thing I like the most is its search engine built-in address bar. It allows you to search a keyword by typing it into the address bar, without opening a Google front page.

I have discovered that after I got back from the States, whenever I search something through the chrome address bar, it uses Google.com.hk as the default search engine. I think I don’t have to explicitly explain why Google HK is annoying compare to the Google English version.

After several attempts, I have discovered a way to switch the default search engine back to Google English. Here is how.

1. Click the Tool icon on the top-right corner of the Chrome Browser.
2. Select “Option”.
3. In the “Basic” tab, you will see a “Default Search” item, click “Manage”. You will see a list of search engines you can choose.
4. If you see Google.com with Keyword Google.com, just simply choose that as your default search engine by clicking “Make Default”.

If you don’t see that item:

4.1 Click “Add” and type following strings into the fields.

Name: Google English
Keyword: Google.com
URL: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&biw=1175&bih=747&q=%s&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

And you are good to go!

Update:

However, you should not expect that the altered Google.com will work just like that in the States. For example, you still will be blocked to use Google for several seconds if you searched some censored contents. So, do this if your desire is to see page ranking for the States.

Oh man this is fantastic. I just bought a netbook and every search done in the tool bar was in Chinese. I figured out I had to change the search but I didn’t know how. Thanks so much for the post.
